Michael and Shelly McGowan opened on Carolina Beach in 1998 with one conviction: fresh seafood, real flavors, nothing masked. That conviction still runs every kitchen shift.
How It Started
Michael McGowan was a chef with a clear philosophy — season the catch, serve it your way, and make every guest feel like family. He and Shelly planted that idea on Pleasure Island in 1998, and Carolina Beach has never been quite the same.
The Chowder That Won the World
In 2009, Michael entered his chowder — clams, crab, scallops, fresh vegetables, and potatoes — in the Great Chowder Cook-Off in Newport, RI, and won. He came back in 2010 and 2011 and won again, earning a spot in the Hall of Fame.
Michael's Way of Giving Back
Michael sponsored local athletic teams, ran spirit nights for area schools, and organized the annual Shrimp Open Golf Tournament to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Duke Lung Transplant Program. When he passed away in October 2012, Pleasure Island lost one of its most generous neighbors.
Carrying the Legacy Forward
Since Michael’s passing, Shelly has continued to carry his vision forward with unwavering dedication, ensuring that the legacy he built remains strong. Through her leadership, hard work, and commitment to quality, hospitality, and community, Michael’s Seafood continues to thrive while staying true to the values that Michael established.
